iMPeRFeCT Gallery is pleased to present new exhibits by Peter Handler, Karen Singer & Mason Carter, three extraordinary artists, quietly living among us right here in Germantown, we think you should know them and their very timely works. Artists help us see the world from different perspectives, they help us recognize truths, let's pay attention...
Peter Handler and Karen Singer are husband and wife and they are exhibiting together for the first time in their long life together. Peter is showing his photographs printed on wood, but he's also an accomplished furniture maker and climate activist, which you will see reflected in the craftmanship of his sculptural pieces. Karen's work will be in our project room THe GReaT GLaSS eLeVaToR, she's showing several series of bas-relief ceramic art tiles: a Philadelphia series featuring skylines and bridges and a new series entitled, “Where are we going?”. Mason Carter's whimsical colorful world of imaginary Philly cityscapes (Blendini City'), inhabits the back room of the gallery,
Drunken Forests by Pater Handler
PETER HANDLER
Handler is showing two bodies of work. His photographs, printed on wood, which he has been exploring for ten years, are mostly landscapes, from a macro to micro level. They are printed mostly on red oak, with the physical and textural grain of the wood chosen to enhance the imagery of the photo, so that the final print is the sum of the digital image and the grain.
Aside from making his living as a furniture maker, he has long been a climate activist, working with Citizens’ Climate Lobby and as a co-founder of Honoring the Future. As an activist, he has a body of work, The Canaries in the Coal Mine, sculpturally showing aspects of climate change. These pieces discuss loss of habitat and species extinction, rising sea level, wild fires, the loss of Arctic sea ice, and thawing permafrost.
Where are we going? series by Karen Singer
KAREN SINGER
Karen Singer has been making ceramic tile and ceramic tile murals in Germantown for over 30 years. She is fascinated by bas-relief, in which something flat becomes 3 dimensional. In ceramic tile, she has found a medium that combines relief sculpture and printmaking with vibrant color.
Singer has a talent for finding and expressing hidden history and local culture in a way that expresses deep meaning. The work is characterized by rich texture and pattern, and the quality of the relief modeling.
Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Singer earned a BA at Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, and an MFA in Sculpture at the University of Pennsylvania. Her ceramic tile murals have been commissioned by hospitals, universities, and other non-profits across the U.S. primarily as donor recognition walls and commemorative art.
Blendini City Series by Mason Carter
MASON CARTER
A Jolly Jaunt In Blendini City!
Explore this imaginary city of the future come to life, where the buildings are alive and coexist with humans. Blendini City is built on the belief that the future doesn’t need to be bleak or techno-narcissistic but can celebrate humanity, nature, and shared empathy. This exhibit will show many of the city's neighborhoods, buildings, and the city planning concepts that give this place life!
