A Language of Philadelphia

Join us as we connect with the new poet laureate of Philadelphia, Raquel Salas Rivera, alongside poetry and prose writers Kourtney Fullard, Lorraine Rice, and Maleka Fruean in readings fluent in the many languages of Philadelphia. Language is literal and metaphorical.

What can our words, stories, and discourse create in Germantown and beyond to transcend and shift the limits of literary boundaries?

There will be readings, art, reception, and conversation. Please feel free to bring drink/food for our reception and thoughts and hearts for our afterwards gathering.

"i ask her,
with my mayagüez voice,
how can one live
with so much pain that stops
mid-motion here
in motion, wanting
finally to not have to
dream oneself different,
knowing that this place
has names?"

from "eclipse/eclipse" by Raquel Salas Rivera

John Dough's America

Meet John Dough, Superhero: A Political Fantasy by Lucy Bell Jarka-Sellers

A Multi-Media Performance with music, images, play-acting, food, and discussion

Author and illustrator Lucy Bell Jarka-Sellers will be joined by Miles Thompson on guitar and Andres Villamil on bass for a multi-media performance that starts as an illustrated book talk and ends as a musical play (with audience participation). Whimsical edible art will be served afterwards as Miles and Andres play more music.

Extra! If you like to write poetry…. Write a new verse for America the Beautiful (note meter and rhyme scheme!) and send it to Lucy Bell (snake.lbwjs@gmail.com) by March 8. Here’s an example:

O beautiful for marching feet
Of our courageous youth,
Who, undeterred by lying word,
Bear witness to the truth.
America! America!
Your children see the fault
In selling soul to buy control
With weapons of assault.

What’s beautiful about America? What’s wrong with it? How can we appeal to what’s beautiful to help us to mend what’s wrong?
