BETH EMMOTT
As a Philadelphia artist my work in a variety of disciplines keeps me fresh and each feeds the other.

Sometimes it is exploring the beauty of nature, sometimes it is about venting the condition of the world, sometimes it's just for fun! My exhibition, "Places.Spaces", represents several ideas mainly through painting and fiber. One is about joy in the natural world but I want people to consider what we risk losing. Another deals partly with memory and partly with recent events—what was and what is. A third is about having a good time. Whether through painting or slow stitching, book making or weaving, my pieces often explore the mystery of the moment—what has happened, what is happening and what is about to happen. What events have led up to that moment? I hope my work evokes these questions.

This exhibit/installation is an exploration of the many faces we have and facets of our lives. I allow a set to form in my mind and then begin to build it in my studio. After I begin to see how I want to present in that environment. Most of photos are me in the guise of a woman some a man. Many are projections of my inner self some are fantasies past/present/future. I explore within who am I who would I have been in another body/gender.

And then there is you the viewer. What do you see? Who do you see? Where do you see yourself what gets stirred up for you? Homophobia? Class? Age? Nudity? Race?

As a child I was not allowed to explore these issues and now in my 70’s I am doing the exploring. Camera in hand (tripod) I move forward to see who am I now! Moving around the world in a more gender fluid body and clothing exploring what I was not able to before.

I look forward to hearing what you think about my exploration and your own explorations and experiences.

Thank you. Dove Nasir
